Example: a 1600 × 1600 illustration saved as WebP

373 KBbefore (WebP)
686 KBas PNG
83quality score (minimum 80)
2.85 MBa plain conversion, 4 times bigger

A public-domain village illustration scaled to 1600 px and saved as WebP at quality 85. A PNG of a detailed picture is always bigger than a WebP; PicoDiet's is a quarter of the size of a plain lossless conversion with ImageMagick.

Why convert WebP to PNG

Images saved from websites often come as WebP, and not every program takes them: older Photoshop and Illustrator versions, PowerPoint and Keynote on older systems, many design and print tools. PNG opens everywhere and, unlike JPG, keeps transparent backgrounds, which matters for logos, stickers and cut-outs.

A straight conversion stores every pixel in full colour, so a 300 KB WebP easily turns into a 3 MB PNG.

How PicoDiet converts WebP to PNG

PicoDiet tries palettes of different sizes and keeps the smallest PNG that still looks the same as the WebP (quality score 80 by default), with a check that edges, text and gradients don't get visibly worse. When no palette is good enough, the PNG keeps full colour. Transparency is kept, including soft edges. How the score works

Editing the image further? Set the quality to 95 for the closest copy.

How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Drop your WebP files above, choose them, or paste an image copied from a web page with Ctrl+V or ⌘V.
  2. Each one becomes a PNG right away at quality 80. Raise the quality for images you'll edit further.
  3. Compare each PNG with the WebP up close, then download it or all of them as a ZIP.

PNG or JPG?

For photos, WebP to JPG gives files many times smaller than PNG. Choose PNG for graphics, screenshots, drawings and anything with a transparent background.

WebP to PNG questions

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

WebP uses lossy compression that PNG doesn't have, so the same picture needs more bytes as PNG. PicoDiet reduces colours only as far as the image still looks the same, which keeps the PNG as small as it can be.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept, so logos and stickers stay cut out.

Can I convert animated WebP to PNG?

Yes. Animated WebP becomes an animated PNG (APNG), which browsers show as an animation. For chat apps and older software, convert it to GIF in Options.

Is the conversion lossless?

Not at the default setting, which uses a palette where it looks the same. At quality 95 the PNG is the closest copy PicoDiet makes; it may still reduce colours where the difference can't be seen.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
