91quality score (minimum 80)
461 KBa plain conversion

The public-domain Wikimania 2024 logo on a white background, saved as a JPG at quality 90. With few colours, the PNG came out smaller than the JPG; a plain lossless conversion with ImageMagick was 4 times PicoDiet's size.

Why convert JPG to PNG

Some places want PNG: design tools and slide templates, sites that ask for logos as PNG, sticker and icon uploads, or simply an editor where you'll add text and don't want each save to lose detail again. PNG is lossless, so further edits don't add JPG artifacts.

A plain conversion stores every pixel of the JPG in full colour, including its compression noise, so the PNG is usually several times bigger.

How PicoDiet converts JPG to PNG

PicoDiet tries palettes of different sizes and keeps the smallest PNG that still looks the same as your JPG (quality score 80 by default), checking that edges and text don't get visibly worse. Logos, graphics and screenshots often end up smaller than the JPG. Photos need full colour, and then the PNG stays bigger. How the score works

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop your JPG files above or choose them, up to 30 at once.
  2. Each one becomes a PNG right away at quality 80. Raise the quality to 95 for the closest copy before editing.
  3. Compare each PNG with the JPG up close, then download it or all of them as a ZIP.

Does PNG make the background transparent?

No. Converting doesn't remove anything: a JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same background. Removing a background is a separate job for an editor or a background-removal tool; after that, PicoDiet can make the transparent PNG smaller.

JPG to PNG questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. Detail the JPG already lost can't come back. PNG only stops further losses when you edit and save again.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

For photos that's normal: PNG stores colour exactly and photos have hundreds of thousands of colours. Keep photos as JPG, or compress the JPG instead, unless something insists on PNG.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No, it keeps the JPG's background. JPG has no transparency to carry over.

Is the PNG lossless?

The PNG file is lossless, but at the default setting PicoDiet may reduce colours where it looks the same. Set the quality to 95 for the closest copy.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
