Example: a sunset with a smooth sky
A public-domain sunset photo from a Nikon D300. Smooth gradients are where AVIF shows flaws first: ImageMagick's default AVIF was far smaller but scored 71, with visible flaws up close. PicoDiet raised the setting until the whole sky passed.
Why convert JPG to AVIF
AVIF stores photos in far fewer bytes than JPG and every current browser shows it, so converting your site's photos speeds up pages and improves Core Web Vitals. Many photos shrink by half or more at the same look.
The risk is the setting. Pick a low one and smooth areas such as skies, skin and studio backgrounds turn blotchy; pick a high one for safety and much of the gain is gone.
How PicoDiet converts JPG to AVIF
PicoDiet searches for the lowest AVIF setting at which the photo still looks the same as your JPG (quality score 80 by default), and also checks the worst small area, so a single banded patch of sky is enough to raise the setting. Colour profiles are kept; camera and location data are not copied. How the score works
How to convert JPG to AVIF
- Drop your JPG photos above or choose them, up to 30 at once.
- Each one becomes an AVIF right away at quality 80. For a website, also pick a size in Options, for example 1920 px.
- Compare each AVIF with the JPG up close, then download them as a ZIP.
AVIF or WebP?
AVIF is usually the smaller of the two for photos. WebP encodes faster and is accepted by more tools; see JPG to WebP. Many sites serve AVIF with a WebP or JPG fallback.

JPG to AVIF questions
How much smaller is AVIF than JPG?
Often half the size or less at the same look; photos with large smooth areas need a higher setting and gain less, as in the example above.
Will the AVIF look worse than my JPG?
Not at normal viewing. PicoDiet keeps only results that score at least 80 against your JPG, and you can compare them zoomed in.
Why does AVIF take longer?
AVIF encoding needs more computing than JPG or WebP, so each photo takes a few seconds longer.
Do all browsers show AVIF?
All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari do. For very old browsers, serve a JPG or WebP fallback with the HTML picture element.
How many photos can I convert at once?
Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.
Are my images private?
Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
