Example: a photo exported as WebP at quality 90
A public-domain harbour photo saved by cwebp at quality 90, as many export tools do, then run through PicoDiet with its default settings.
Why compress a WebP that is already compressed?
WebP is efficient, but how small a WebP file is depends on the quality setting it was saved with. A WebP exported at high quality often has room to shrink: the example above went from 148 KB to 99.8 KB and still scores 83.
How PicoDiet compresses WebP
PicoDiet tries several WebP quality levels for each image and keeps the smallest file that still looks the same as the original (quality score 80 by default). Transparent WebPs keep their transparency. How the score works
Animated WebPs stay animated, with every frame and its timing kept. Under Options an animation can also become a GIF or an animated PNG.
How to compress a WebP
- Drop your WebP files above or choose them; up to 30 at once.
- Each one is compressed right away at quality 80. Raise it for hero images, lower it for thumbnails.
- Compare with the original, zoomed in where it changed most, and download one file or a ZIP.
WebP or another format?
- For photos that must open everywhere (email, older apps, upload forms), JPEG is safer. Open Options and choose JPEG for WebP photos without transparency. Auto also switches photos to JPEG when that is clearly smaller, and can scale large ones down.
- For the smallest web images, try AVIF under Options. On two test photos at score 80, AVIF was 22% and 41% smaller than WebP, and all current browsers show it.
- For screenshots and graphics, compare with PNG: a reduced-colour PNG can beat WebP on flat colours and text.
A green badge on Auto or on an option tells you when it would save more than 10% over the current result.

WebP questions
Is WebP lossy or lossless?
Both: WebP has a lossy and a lossless mode. PicoDiet uses lossy WebP for photos and keeps the result only when it scores at least your setting, so the loss stays below what you can see at normal size.
Can I compress animated WebP?
Yes. Animations stay animated, with every frame and its timing kept.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes, transparent areas and soft edges are kept.
Why didn't my WebP get smaller?
It was already saved close to the lowest quality that keeps your score. PicoDiet then keeps your original file instead of making a bigger one.
Do all browsers show WebP?
All current browsers do, including Safari since 2020. Some older desktop apps and email clients still don't, which is when JPEG is the safer choice.
Are my images private?
Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
