Convert PNG to WebP

Make PNG graphics, screenshots and transparent images far smaller for the web by converting them to WebP, with each result checked against the original. Up to 30 at once.

  1. 1. Add imagesDrop one or many. Each is optimized right away at quality 80, as WebP.
  2. 2. Adjust the qualityStart at quality score 80. Raise it to keep more detail, or lower it for smaller files.
  3. 3. Compare and downloadOpen an image to compare it zoomed in and change it on its own, then download one or all as a ZIP.

Example: a 2400 × 2400 transparent 3D icon

2.69 MBbefore (PNG)
117 KBas WebP, 96% smaller
88quality score (minimum 80)
Kepttransparency and soft shadows

A public-domain 3D icon with gradients, shadows and a transparent background. The score ended above 80 because PicoDiet also limits how much any small area may change.

Why convert PNG to WebP

PNG is lossless, which makes it large: a single hero image or icon set can weigh megabytes and slow a page down. WebP supports the same things PNG is used for, including transparency, and every current browser shows it. Converting is one of the quickest ways to improve a page's load time and its Core Web Vitals.

The usual advice is "use WebP at quality 75 to 80", but a fixed setting fits some images and damages others. Text in screenshots and smooth gradients show flaws first, while busy textures hide them.

How PicoDiet converts PNG to WebP

For each image PicoDiet searches for the lowest WebP setting that still looks the same as the PNG (quality score 80 by default), and checks that no small area such as a line of text or a gradient gets visibly worse. Transparency is kept, including semi-transparent edges. How the score works

Not every PNG gains from WebP: a small flat logo can already be tiny as PNG. The card for each image shows the change, so you can keep the PNG where WebP doesn't pay.

How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop your PNG files above, choose them, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or ⌘V.
  2. Each one becomes a WebP right away at quality 80. Use Options to also scale images down, for example to 1920 px.
  3. Compare each WebP with the PNG up close, then download it, or all of them as a ZIP.

WebP or AVIF?

AVIF is often smaller still, especially for photos and gradients, and all current browsers support it too; see PNG to AVIF. WebP encodes faster and is accepted by more tools and content systems, so it is the safer default.

PNG to WebP questions

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept, so icons and cut-outs still sit cleanly on any background.

Is the WebP lossless?

It's lossy, which is what makes it so small. PicoDiet only keeps results that look the same as your PNG at normal viewing (score 80 or more), and you can raise the score for images you'll edit again.

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes, every current browser, including Safari since 2020. Some older desktop software and upload forms still don't, so keep the PNG if you need to send the file elsewhere.

Why is my WebP not much smaller?

The PNG was probably small already, such as a simple logo with few colours. In that case keep the PNG: choose Original above the results and PicoDiet just makes the PNG smaller.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
