Example: a transparent photo cut-out

868 KBbefore (PNG, 780 × 1040)
132 KBas AVIF, 85% smaller
83quality score (minimum 80)
64.7 KBa plain conversion, score 68

A public-domain flower cut-out with soft transparent edges. ImageMagick at its default setting made a smaller AVIF, but it scored 68, with flaws you can see up close. PicoDiet kept the score above 80.

Why convert PNG to AVIF

AVIF is the most efficient image format browsers support today: smaller than WebP and far smaller than PNG for photos, gradients and cut-outs, with transparency and wide colour. Every current browser shows it, so it is a strong choice for hero images, product photos on transparent backgrounds and illustrations.

AVIF settings are tricky, though: the same number can be perfect for one image and smear another.

How PicoDiet converts PNG to AVIF

PicoDiet searches for the lowest AVIF setting at which the result still looks the same as your PNG (quality score 80 by default), and checks that no small area gets visibly worse. Transparency, including soft edges, is kept. How the score works

How to convert PNG to AVIF

  1. Drop your PNG files above, choose them, or paste one with Ctrl+V or ⌘V.
  2. Each one becomes an AVIF right away at quality 80. AVIF takes a little longer to encode than other formats.
  3. Compare each AVIF with the PNG up close, then download it or all of them as a ZIP.

AVIF or WebP?

AVIF is usually smaller. WebP encodes faster and more plugins, editors and content systems accept it. If your site or CMS doesn't take AVIF yet, use PNG to WebP.

PNG to AVIF questions

Does AVIF keep transparency?

Yes, including semi-transparent edges and shadows.

Do all browsers support AVIF?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari do. Very old browsers don't; a site can offer a PNG or WebP fallback with the HTML picture element.

Is AVIF good for logos and screenshots?

It works, but for flat graphics and text a well-compressed PNG or WebP is often just as small. Compare the sizes on the cards and keep the smaller one.

Can I open AVIF files on my computer?

Browsers and recent macOS open them; Windows may need Microsoft's free AV1 extension, and some older editors don't open them at all. Keep your PNG originals for editing.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
