Example: a 1920 px photo saved as WebP

62.2 KBbefore (WebP)
62.5 KBas JPG, about the same size
80quality score (minimum 80)
216 KBa plain conversion, 3.5 times bigger

A public-domain sunset photo scaled to 1920 px and saved as WebP at quality 85, the way many websites serve images. PicoDiet's JPG came out the same size as the WebP. ImageMagick at its default setting (JPEG quality 92) made a file 3.5 times bigger for a difference you can't see.

Why convert WebP to JPG

Most websites now serve images as WebP, so a picture you save from a browser often lands as a .webp file. Browsers show it fine, but plenty of other places don't: older versions of Photoshop and Windows Photo Viewer, many upload forms, print shops, some messengers and email clients. JPG opens everywhere.

The catch is size. WebP is more efficient than JPG, so a careless conversion makes the file several times bigger. A converter with a fixed high setting does exactly that: it doesn't know the WebP was already compressed, so it spends bytes keeping every compression trace in perfect detail.

How PicoDiet converts WebP to JPG

PicoDiet decodes the WebP and searches for the lowest JPG setting at which the result still looks the same as that WebP (quality score 80 by default), checking that no small area such as text or a face gets visibly worse. Each image gets its own setting, so a busy photo and a flat graphic both end up as small as they can. How the score works

Colour profiles are kept. Animated WebP files can't become JPG, which holds one frame, so they stay WebP, and so do images with transparency, since JPG has none.

How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Drop your WebP files above, choose them, or paste an image copied from a web page with Ctrl+V or ⌘V.
  2. Each one is converted to JPG right away at quality 80. Raise the quality to keep more detail, or switch on File size if a form needs the JPG under a limit such as 100 KB.
  3. Open an image to compare the JPG with the original WebP up close, then download it, or all of them as a ZIP.

JPG or PNG?

JPG is the right choice for photos and anything photo-like. For logos, screenshots, drawings with flat colour, or images with a transparent background, convert WebP to PNG instead: JPG would blur sharp edges and fill transparent areas.

WebP to JPG questions

Will the JPG look worse than the WebP?

Not at normal viewing. PicoDiet keeps only results that score at least 80 against the WebP, which means they look the same at normal size, and you can compare them zoomed in before downloading. Raise the quality if you plan to edit the image further.

Why is my JPG bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses better than JPG, so the same picture usually needs a few more bytes as a JPG. PicoDiet keeps that difference as small as it can; a plain converter often makes the file 2 to 4 times bigger.

Can I convert animated WebP to JPG?

No: a JPG holds a single frame. Animated WebP files stay WebP here, and you can convert them to GIF in Options if you need wider support.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG can't store transparency, so an image with a transparent background stays WebP or can be saved as PNG. Choose PNG in Options, or use the WebP to PNG page.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB. Download them one by one or as a ZIP.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
