Example: a 12-megapixel portrait saved as AVIF

517 KBbefore (AVIF, 4032 × 3024)
704 KBas JPG
80quality score (minimum 80)
2.08 MBa plain conversion, 3 times bigger

A public-domain portrait from an iPhone 15 Pro Max, saved as AVIF at quality 60. AVIF is the more efficient format, so the JPG is a bit bigger; a plain conversion with ImageMagick (JPEG quality 92) was three times PicoDiet's size.

Why convert AVIF to JPG

AVIF is a newer format that more and more websites serve because it is so small. Browsers show it, but many programs don't open it yet: older photo editors, Windows Photo Viewer without an extension, office software, and lots of upload forms that only accept JPG or PNG.

Converting with a fixed high JPG setting works, but the file comes out several times bigger than it needs to be.

How PicoDiet converts AVIF to JPG

PicoDiet decodes the AVIF and searches for the lowest JPG setting at which it still looks the same as the AVIF (quality score 80 by default), with a separate check on small areas such as faces and text. How the score works

Colour profiles are kept. Images with transparency stay AVIF or can be saved as PNG, since JPG has no transparency, and AVIF animations are kept as they are.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Drop your AVIF files above or choose them, up to 30 at once.
  2. Each one becomes a JPG right away at quality 80. Set a File size if the JPG must fit a form's limit.
  3. Compare each JPG with the AVIF up close, then download it or all of them as a ZIP.

JPG or PNG?

JPG suits photos. For graphics, screenshots and images with transparency, choose PNG in Options; PicoDiet keeps the fewest colours that still look the same.

AVIF to JPG questions

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses much better than JPG, so the same picture needs more bytes as a JPG. PicoDiet keeps the increase as small as it can while the image still looks the same.

Will I lose quality?

Not visibly at normal size: PicoDiet keeps only results that score 80 or more against the AVIF, and you can compare them zoomed in before downloading.

What is AVIF?

AV1 Image File Format, based on the AV1 video codec. It supports transparency, wide colour and HDR, and all current browsers display it.

Can I convert JPG to AVIF too?

Yes, on the JPG to AVIF page, for smaller photos on a website.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
