A public-domain 3D animation and a retro Amiga animation. The 3D one became lossy WebP that scores 80 against the GIF; the pixel art stayed lossless, because its sharp pixels gained nothing from lossy compression.

Why convert GIF to WebP

GIF is from 1987: it holds only 256 colours per frame and compresses poorly, so a few seconds of animation can weigh several megabytes. Animated WebP shows the same animation in every current browser at a fraction of the size, which makes pages load faster and saves your visitors' data.

How PicoDiet converts GIF to WebP

PicoDiet finds the lowest WebP setting at which the animation still looks the same as the GIF (quality score 80 by default), rating up to 12 frames and going by the worst. When to keep GIF

Does the WebP stay animated?

Yes. Every frame, its delay and the loop setting are kept.

Will Discord, Telegram or WhatsApp play animated WebP?

Support varies by app and changes often; many play animated WebP, but some still show only the first frame. Test before relying on it, or keep a GIF for chats.

Why did my GIF shrink only a little?

Pixel art and animations with a few flat colours are what GIF is good at. WebP then stays lossless, and the gain is smaller.

Can I convert WebP back to GIF?

Yes: drop an animated WebP and choose GIF in Options.

Is there a size limit?

Each file can be up to 30 MB and 25 megapixels per frame, up to 30 files at once.
