Example: a 12-megapixel iPhone photo
A public-domain photo from an iPhone 15 Pro Max, saved as HEIC. A photo as PNG is always big: PicoDiet's PNG (quality score 88) is 42% smaller than a plain conversion with ImageMagick, but the same photo as a JPG that looks the same is 8 times smaller again.
When HEIC to PNG makes sense
PNG is lossless, so editing and saving it again never adds new artifacts, and some apps, templates and upload forms accept only PNG. That makes it a fine intermediate format for editing a photo, or for a picture with text added on top.
For sharing, sending or uploading a photo, PNG is the wrong choice: it can't compress photographic detail well, so the files are several times bigger than the HEIC. For that, convert HEIC to JPG.
How PicoDiet converts HEIC to PNG
PicoDiet decodes the HEIC and writes the smallest PNG that still looks the same (quality score 80 by default). For photos that usually means full colour with small, invisible simplifications rather than a palette. The Display P3 colour profile is kept; camera and location data are not copied. How the score works
How to convert HEIC photos to PNG
- Drop your HEIC files above. On an iPhone, tap Choose images and pick them from Photos.
- Each photo becomes a PNG right away. Raise the quality to 95 for the closest copy before editing.
- Compare each PNG with the original up close, then download it or all of them as a ZIP.

HEIC to PNG questions
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses video-style compression that is very efficient for photos; PNG stores colours exactly. A 12-megapixel photo as PNG is usually 5 to 10 MB.
Is HEIC to PNG lossless?
The PNG is lossless from then on. At the default setting PicoDiet may simplify colours where it can't be seen; set the quality to 95 for the closest copy.
Are the iPhone colours kept?
Yes. The Display P3 colour profile goes into the PNG.
Should I choose PNG or JPG?
JPG for sharing, email, websites and forms; PNG only for editing or when a program requires it.
How many photos can I convert at once?
Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.
Are my images private?
Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
