Compress AVIF

Make AVIF files smaller while they still look the same, or convert JPG, PNG and WebP to AVIF for lighter web pages. Up to 30 at once.

  1. 1. Add imagesDrop one or many. Each is optimized right away at quality 80, in its own format.
  2. 2. Adjust the qualityStart at quality score 80. Raise it to keep more detail, or lower it for smaller files.
  3. 3. Compare and downloadOpen an image to compare it zoomed in and change it on its own, then download one or all as a ZIP.

Example: a photo exported as AVIF at quality 90

380 KBbefore (AVIF, 2048 × 1683)
153 KBafter, still AVIF
60% smallersaved
84quality score (minimum 80)

A public-domain harbour photo saved by avifenc at quality 90, then run through PicoDiet with its default settings.

Why AVIF files can still be too big

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats browsers support: it uses the AV1 video codec to store a still image. But an AVIF is only as small as the setting it was saved with, and one exported at high quality may still shrink without a visible change: the example above went from 380 KB to 153 KB and still scores 84.

How PicoDiet compresses AVIF

PicoDiet tries several AVIF quality levels for each image and keeps the smallest file that still looks the same as the original (quality score 80 by default). Transparency and the colour profile are kept. How the score works

Turn other images into AVIF

To convert a still image to AVIF, open Options and choose AVIF. On two test photos at score 80, AVIF was 22–24% smaller than JPEG and 22–41% smaller than WebP:

Photo, score 80JPEGWebPAVIF
Harbour, 2048 × 1683160 KB157 KB122 KB
City at night (iPhone), 1440 × 1920417 KB551 KB325 KB

AVIF takes longer to encode than JPEG or WebP, so a batch of large photos may take a few seconds per image.

How to compress an AVIF

  1. Drop your AVIF files above or choose them; up to 30 at once.
  2. Each one is compressed right away at quality 80. Move the slider to trade size against detail.
  3. Compare with the original, zoomed in where it changed most, and download one file or a ZIP.

When AVIF is not the right choice

All current browsers show AVIF, but many desktop apps, email clients and upload forms still don't accept it. For files people will download, attach or edit, JPEG is safer. For animations, use GIF or animated WebP: PicoDiet keeps animated AVIF files as they are.

AVIF questions

Is AVIF better than WebP?

For photos it is usually smaller at the same visual quality: 22–41% in our tests. WebP encodes faster and is accepted by more apps.

Do all browsers support AVIF?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show AVIF. Some older devices and many non-browser apps don't.

Can I convert JPEG or PNG to AVIF?

Yes. Choose Options above the results and pick AVIF; PicoDiet finds the smallest AVIF that keeps your quality setting.

Can PicoDiet compress animated AVIF?

Not yet. Animated AVIF files are kept as they are; GIF, WebP and APNG animations are compressed.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
