A public-domain harbour photo straight from a DSLR. ImageMagick at its default setting made a WebP 2.7 times bigger than PicoDiet's. Scaled down to 1920 px with Options, the WebP would be smaller still.

Why convert JPG to WebP

Photos are usually the heaviest part of a web page. WebP stores the same photo in fewer bytes than JPG, and every current browser shows it, so converting makes pages load faster and helps Core Web Vitals, without changing what visitors see.

Converting an already compressed JPG is a second round of compression, though. Push it too far and the new file shows blocks and smudges; play it safe with a high setting and you lose most of the gain.

How PicoDiet converts JPG to WebP

PicoDiet searches for the lowest WebP setting at which the result still looks the same as your JPG (quality score 80 by default), and checks small areas such as faces and text separately. Each photo gets the setting it needs, rather than one number for all. How the score works

Colour profiles are kept, so photos from phones that shoot in Display P3 keep their colours. Camera and location data are not copied.

How to convert JPG to WebP

  1. Drop your JPG photos above or choose them, up to 30 at once.
  2. Each one becomes a WebP right away at quality 80. For a website, also pick a size in Options: 1920 px or less is plenty for most layouts.
  3. Compare each WebP with the JPG up close, then download them as a ZIP.

WebP or AVIF?

AVIF is often smaller still for photos and is supported by all current browsers; see JPG to AVIF. WebP encodes faster and more tools, plugins and content systems accept it.

JPG to WebP questions

Will the WebP look worse than my JPG?

Not at normal viewing size. PicoDiet keeps only results that score at least 80 against your JPG, and you can compare them zoomed in. Raise the score for images that will be shown very large.

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

It depends on the photo and on how compressed the JPG already was. Camera photos often shrink by more than half; JPGs that were heavily compressed before shrink less, because their flaws have to be kept too.

Should I keep the JPG?

Keep your originals. Serve WebP on your website and use the JPG for email, printing and software that doesn't open WebP.

How do I keep the original file names?

Open the menu next to the download button and turn on Keep original file names: photo.jpg becomes photo.webp instead of photo-min.webp.

How many photos can I convert at once?

Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.

Are my images private?

Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
