Example: a 2560 px photo saved as PNG
A public-domain sunset photo scaled to 2560 px and saved as PNG. ImageMagick at its default setting (JPEG quality 92) made a JPG 3.4 times bigger than PicoDiet's.
Why convert PNG to JPG
PNG is lossless, so a photo saved as PNG keeps every pixel and ends up huge: a phone screenshot of a photo, an export from an editor or a download from a stock site can weigh several megabytes. Email attachments, job portals and government forms often refuse files that size, or accept only JPG.
JPG is built for photos. It drops detail the eye doesn't notice, so the same picture takes a fraction of the space.
How PicoDiet converts PNG to JPG
PicoDiet looks for the lowest JPG setting at which the image still looks the same as your PNG (quality score 80 by default), and checks small areas such as faces and text separately so they don't get blurred. How the score works
JPG has no transparency. A PNG with a transparent background therefore stays PNG, made smaller with fewer colours, and the card tells you so. Animated PNGs stay animated.
How to convert PNG to JPG
- Drop your PNG files above, choose them, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or ⌘V.
- Each one becomes a JPG right away at quality 80. If a form has a size limit, switch on File size and pick it, for example 200 KB.
- Compare each JPG with the PNG up close, then download it or all of them as a ZIP.
When to keep PNG
Keep PNG for logos, icons, diagrams, screenshots of text and anything with a transparent background: JPG blurs sharp edges and fills transparency. To make those smaller, use Compress PNG instead.

PNG to JPG questions
Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy, but PicoDiet keeps only results that look the same at normal viewing (score 80 or more), and you can compare them zoomed in. Raise the score for images you'll print or edit.
What happens to a transparent background?
JPG can't store transparency, so such PNGs stay PNG, made smaller. If you want a JPG with a white background, fill the background in your editor first.
Why did a screenshot get only a little smaller?
Screenshots of text and interfaces are what PNG is best at, and JPG struggles with their sharp edges. PicoDiet then needs a high JPG setting to keep the text crisp. For these, compressing the PNG usually gives the smaller file.
Can I make the JPG fit an upload limit?
Yes. Switch on File size and choose a limit, from 20 KB to 2 MB or your own. PicoDiet then finds the best-looking JPG under it.
How many images can I convert at once?
Up to 30 per batch, each up to 25 megapixels and 30 MB.
Are my images private?
Yes. Images are uploaded over an encrypted connection to the nearest of our servers, optimized, and deleted within 3 minutes after you finish. They are never shared, sold or used for training, and there is no account to sign up for. Details are in the privacy policy.
